Believe it or not, we only have a few days of summer left. It feels like yesterday when my family was dreaming of summer. We longed for the long days of playing outside, gardens full of produce, faces full of ice cream, being with friends and movie nights. No school, all play, and plenty of time for memories to be made. Summer seemed to spread before us like an ocean of possibilities, waiting to be experienced.
Then, we blinked, and somehow, school is back in session, the days are growing shorter and the air cooler. How that happened, I don’t know. What bothers me even more than how fast summer moves is how fast we move through the seasons. By mid or late July we start seeing fall candy at the stores. By late August or early September we switch seasonal decorations in our homes, impatiently wishing summer away to make space for Fall. We looked forward to summer for so long, only to barely have a taste of it and leave it behind to pursue the next best thing. It isn’t only the summer that we leave behind, but all the good memories we made in it. So what if we didn’t move as fast? What if we sat with the season, took a mouthful and fully savored it? What if we took time to delight ourselves in memories made instead of always running after new experiences?
Don’t get me wrong. I like change. I look forward to it. But I am also learning that taking time to savor my present blessings makes me happier, more present and less future oriented (which is potentially great, but not guaranteed). Friend, take time to savor the now. Tomorrow will come in due time.
